CD-ROM Disappearing

By jlstrader ·
I had some one run the updates from Windows Update and after that, the CDROM was gone. It is not listed in My Computer or in Windows Explorer. It is not even listed in the Device manager in Normal mode. I went into Safe mode and deleted it and that did not help either. It was listed in safe mode and that is it. Plus, every time I boot the computer, it comes up with the options to go to safe mode and such. What is the cause and how can I get it back? I have been working on this all day and cannot figure it out. I am on 98 and I know that the only to get it back in 2000 pro is to reinstall and I do not want to do that. Please help me.

Quit obvious that something happen in your IDE controller or disk drives(I assume you use IDE harddisk).

A suggestion to troubeshoot it:

1. Ensure that your CDROM works properly: try to inert a bootable CDROM disc to see if it boot normally. Or use a bootable floppy with CDROM driver to test it.

2. Free as much hardware source (e.g. IRQ) as you can: disable all the com ports, parallel port, USB port, if possible, unplug any add-on cards and enable the "Reset PCI resources" option in your BIOS setup. Boot your computer up again to see it can help, it is does, enable the ports and put back the card one by one to see if any of them cause the problem, or it may just fine after resume all the cards and ports.

3. Do not mix cdrom andharddisk in one IDE channel, it will hurt the performance and may cause compatibility problem. If possible, separate them as one IDE cable for one IDE device only.

4. And very important one, scan for viruses.

and more...

Nothing worked. Reloaded windows. I took out everything except essentials and freed all possible IRQs. Had to reload. No tech support anywhere vould ehlpe and this happens on 2000 all the time when you install Adaptec.

The first thing you should look at is the cable.

What I usually do is unplug the cable and boot with out the device connected (not safe mode). After a successful boot, then I put the device back on the cable and boot again. It will probably be there.

I hope this helps.
