CD-ROM drive AutoRun (or AutoPlay?) in XP

By Alex King ·
The simple matter of toggling on/off AutoRun for a CD-ROM/DVD/whatever drive used to be a simple matter. When a friend today declared it "couldn't be done" in XP, I took a look. Although available in TweakUI for Microsoft XP, I found no other simple approach (friend doesn't want to install TweakUI). The AutoPlay tab functions don't provide any overall option, either - and if all set to "Take No Action" a CD inserted into a CD-ROM drive will still AutoRun. Any suggestions?

You should try the Technical Q&A forum instead of the discussion forum. You will get far more help as people there are just there for answering such issues.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom change "autorun" to 0 (zero)

And yes, you better next time use the Technical Q & A section, you'll have the answer to your problems much docummented than in here.

If you are using the DEC entry, the number would be 255. In that way, most CD will cease to load on insert during a window session, except maybe in the case of music CD as specified by programs such as Real Player, Music Match, or what not.
