CD Rom drive disappeared?

by millb293 . Updated 15 years, 4 months ago

Hi friends,
I am running an Acer Aspire 3000 in Windows XP. Recently, the CD Rom drive started acting up (during long multi-disc installations, it would fail to recognize the CD halfway through). Now, the drive doesn’t work at all. The power light works. But the drive does not respond to the eject button, only the override pin hole eject. The CD spins inside the drive, but it is not making contact with the computer. There is no CD-Rom listed in Device Manager, or Disc Manager. I ran a driver update, and it listed the CD drive (it’s a Matshita CD RW) as one of several ‘unplugged’ devices. I also tried a Registry fix I found online by deleting the upper and lower filter values from one of the keys.
I am weary of manual dissassembly, though I Imagine it is a physical malfunction. So, if you could be very thorough with any disassembly instructions….
help!?????
thanks!
