CD-ROM drive locked out by utility

By bullard8 ·
CD-ROM Drive is locked out by a "utility". This happened either accidentally or independently. I cannot use the CD-ROM to access any CD'S, data or music. How do I remove this "utility"?

To remove the CD-ROM device drivers, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, Shutdown, and then Restart.
2. Press F8 during Startup to access the Startup menu. Ignore any error messages that pop-up. 3. Choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu and press Enter.
4. On the Desktop, right-click My Computer and select Properties.
5. Click the Device Manager tab.
6. Double-click CDROM.
7. Click the first listed CD-ROM drive to highlight it.
8. Click Remove.
9. Remove any additional CD-ROM devices following steps 1 through 7.
10. Click OK.
11. Restart the computer.

If still the error continues, provide more detail on the error.

First off what "utility" is running? Once you find out what it is try unistalling it to see if the problem goes away. If not remove any instaces of the "utility" from your registry.

If you're looking to find a piece of software that appears to be active the moment windows starts up, check these locations:

1) Startup folder
2) Startup folder All Users (NT only) Winnt\profiles\all users\programs\startup

3)these registry keys:

HKLM\Software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\Run
HKLM\Software\microsoft\windows\currentVersion\RunServices

4) If you're running NT, also check the Services for unfamiliar entries .

Hope I've been of any help.
