CD-ROM Issue

By tobrahs ·
I have a home network with 3 computers. 1 with W2K desktop, 1 XP Home laptop and 1 XP Home desktop. All have plenty of Ghz & RAM. All antivirus def files are up to date and systems are scanned regularly. Attempted to install SIM2 however 2 of the 3 computers would not recognize the CD in the drive. On the W2K and XP Home laptop an error message said to Insert Media into the Drive. How can I get the computers to read the CD?

is the CD clean? sometimes the cd drive may be more touchy to read a cd. or the drives may be dirty - use a cd-rom cleaner disc in the drives.

are you running an install over the network or on each machine separately? set up the cd drive to be shared over the network and try installing that way

The CD is clean, new out of the package. I have yet to try the CD-ROM cleaner. I was attempting to install directly to the machine so the sharing of the drive and installing over the network is a workaround. Is there anything else it could be besides 2 dirty cd-rom drives?

See if drives will read other CDs. If so, probably not a drive problem.

Gamers familar with copy protection may be able to shed more light on this. Could be that you need to update CD drive(s) firmware to recognize altered media.

Given additional info, it is very likely that you either need a firmware upgrade or a newer drive.

The 2 cd rom drives that are not able to read the SIMS2 cd are able to read and execute other cds.

Is this happening durring or after the install? If the game is installed you may need the CD inserted to play the game, meaning 3 copies. Or over the network it may be setup to find that the game is already installed. Disable sharing or disconnect the other system.
