CD Rom Not detected in Windows 95

By beckfrench ·
I have a computer with a CD Rom which wasn't working. On startup (when you 1st power on the pc) it would go through and detect the HDD and also the CD Rom, but for some reason, once in Windows you couldn't view the CD Rom.

Thinking it was a faulty CDRom, I purchased a new CDRom and installed it, but it has the exact same problem.

I went into Device Manager to see if their were any errors displayed for the CDRom but it doesn't even display the CDRom at all. I found this very strange considering it detects it when the computer first boots up.

Please help me. What could be the problem?

If the power light comes on the CD, then maybe your data cable is bad. Remember the end of the ribbon cable with the red wire goes next to the power connector. Push it in firmly.

I found the problem was that a line regarding the CDRom in the Autoexec.bat file had the 'rem' command in front of it. Once I removed 'rem' from the line, the CD Rom worked in Windows. Thank you for your suggestion anyway.

You need to reinstall the cdrom driver.

If the bios sees it the cable is good, also it is a new drive.

You can get the driver from the CDROM's site, or go to http://www.driverguide.com/

I once had a Samsung 32x and it had he same problem. When I firs started the computer, the CDRom wasn't visible in Windows, but when I restarted from the Shutdown menu, Windows recognized the CDRom. The difference is that when Ibought a new CDRom, the problem dissaeared. I hope this is of some help.

Win 95 is notorious for losing cdrom icons.
If your cd works in dos but not windows answer 1 is correct, reinstall drivers. But a virus will also cause this icon to disappear so run a virus scan first. Better yet upgrade to Win 98 and you will never have a prob again.
