CD ROM not reading correctly

By Kareem ·
I have a win98 2nd edition system with a cd-rom and a cd-r. About a month ago I installed adaptec CD-Writer 4.0 and I think it messed up the driver for my cdrom. Now my cdrom can only read audio cd's. Anything else would also be read as an audio cd.I have removed the cdrom, reinstalled the driver, unistalled adaptec cd writer, but nothing seems to be working. Do you have any ideas of how I can get my cdrom back to normal??

Three suggestions:

1) Make sure your IDE cables are snuggly attached to the drives and motherboard, also, make sure that there are no bent pins on either your motherboard or drives.

2) Make sure you have only one master and one slave per IDE cable.

3) If you have already checked the above I would uninstall any CDR software and then goto the device manager and remove them both the Cdrom and the Cdr. Then reboot and let windows attempt to detect them.

My best guess is that you eitherhave a bent pin(s) or two master or two slaves on one IDE cable.
