CD-Rom opens & closes at will

By ddvorpahl ·
Recently my cd-rom started opening and closing when it wants to. I have two cd-roms, one cd-rom reader & one cd-rw. I thought it might be an overheating problem, but opened the case to let air flow so stopped that idea. Drive is unusable as system cannot recognize drive while it is opening & closing. Any way to stop drive from opening & closing so I can use drive?

It could be a short in the eject button. The drive might be going bad. Contact the manufacturer of the drive if it fairly new to see if you can get it replaced, otherwise get a new drive.

If the eject button was shorted it would open and then stay open wouldn't it? Or it might refuse to open at all. Not just open & close at differing times, almost like they are timed with cycles of the computer.

This sort of thing tends to happen when the system wants a disk inserted for something. Check what you have running in the background. Also, what OS are you using?

I don't have anything special running in the background. I have Win98SE with 550MHZ, 384MG Ram, various harddrives, 8G, 30G, 40G & 60G. The drive has worked fine recently. Acted up due to overheating (I thought) and then I opened case.

Replace the drive.

There are 3 mechanical switches it the open / close of the drive.. Push button is one logical function.. switch closed and switch open... user push button.. switch closed active so electronics will open the drive and tray will come out until open switch is active to stop operation.. not electronics thinks user has pushed button and sw/open is active so electronics tells motor to close drive and 123,123,123,123,123,123,123, you get the picture.. Unless it is an high $$ drive pitch it... This operation I would suspect begins the instance you power on the system and will not stop...

By the time you get it replace and repaired you will have spent more time and money than this whole process is worth...

Luck....

Thank you for your support. I changed the cables from the CD Rom to the hard drive & it is working fine. Hope this is the last time I have this problem.

its not an overheating problem because the computer has insuiffic rights to do that although there is a file in the root dir that tells the computer to open cdrom when informed you may have a script virus (VBS) that opens the directory of the cdrom which opens and closes it via the c:\windows dir
(Visual Basic Script )
try going to www.sygate.com and getting them to scan ya pc
if not a virus try consulting a pc technition goodluck bro

Don't forget to run an up-to-date anti-virus program! I know there are back-door trojan programs (netbus) that allow the cracker on the other end to do this.
