CD ROM returns incorrect function error

By dharwell ·
I am experiencing this issue on a box running Windows 2000 Professional. When the CD-ROM drive is accessed, the user receives the error "E is not accessible, incorrect function". There has never been a USB device of any kind attached to this box,and the standard registry fixes have not had any effect. Any input would be appreciated!

that cd may be write protected with a software. ( I do that to protect my cd's too)
Use other normal cd's and it will work.

This error occurs with all CD's that are tried in the drive.

Do you have an Iomega zip drive attached to this computer? The only references to that error message I've seen involves either Windows XP, or an earlier version of Windows with an Iomega zip drive.

If you do have a zip drive, and if it's an external drive plugged into a parallel port, unplug it to see if the error and problem goes away.

(But this would just lead to yet another question, wouldn't it?)

Another possibility. Is this CD Drive an HP CD writer? If it is, I suspect you'll need an updated Windows 2000 driver for it.

See these links for information and driver download links:

"Software originally included with the CD-Writer incompatible with Windows 2000"

Good luck,

This pc has never had any type of CD burner, or any other external storage device installed on it.

It is possible that the CD Rom drive has simply failed. The first thing I'd do is remove that CD Drive from that computer, and put it into another one that is working correctly. If it still is inaccessible on that 2nd computer, then the drive is bad. If it works alright, then you do have other issues.

Let me know the outcome (if you do decide to try that test). This is an interesting problem.

The drive has been swapped with a known functional drive, with the same results.
