Locked

CD Rom Trouble

By telspee ·
My cd rom has only been reading certain disks lately. When I try to open a program on cd I often get the message: Device not ready. Every so often the cd will autorun and everything will be fine. I tried to scan the cd rom, but I got the message that the cd rom is locked by a utillity. I have no idea which utillity or how to find out. There is no resource tab under properties so I have nothing to learn from there. I am running windows 1998 on a pentium II with 320 mb of ram. The cd rom is a sony cdu-701, with a generic driver. I have several utillities loaded like: Nuts and Bolts, Sandra, Norton Anti Virus. I tried to download and run the dos utillity amidiag but it doesn't seem to work. Please help.

Have you tried cleaning the drive (an audio cd-rom cleaner should do the trick)

Does the problem occur when using a certain cd, does it happen to a specific cd or does it happen intermittently? If it is specific to one or two cd's, you may want to check out your cd's. Scratches and/or dirt can cause this problem. If it is random, a cleaning may work, but I have found that this situation typically requires a drive replacement.

Disable all your utilities and try running your CDs again. If still doesn't work, check the status from the Device Manager if the CD-ROM is working properly and no conflicts with other resources. If everything is ok and still doesn't work, re-install your CD-ROM and the drivers. Make sure the cables are all connected properly. Good Luck.

Yes you failed to tell us about the other cdrom, dvd, cdr, cdrw in your machine.
I suggest going to the settings tab for the cdroms in control panel and uncheck DMA. The other utility that has use of the drive is Explorer itself, it is trying to access the drive with 2 calls..
