CD-ROM will not start spinning

By Jaroslav.Vitek ·
My CD-R/RW Ricoh 7040A worked OK untill - it sometimes does not start spinnin/rotating after a CD is inserted; I opened the case and if not it does not start rotating give the CD a small push in the rotating direction, and from now it works OK, untill a new CD is inserted. Any tips/hints, what the problem might be? The PowerSupply is a 300W, only two other HD+FD are connected. OS=WIN NT4.0 WS. Already tried changing cables.

Sounds like the motor is beginning to fail (we're talking the motor inside the drive itself).

Try another drive.

I suspect that the CD tray is not going in all the way.

Try just pressing on the tray as the CD goes in.

You may be able to clean away some dust or grime that is getting in the way of the tray closing.

Usually, I find that 1 of the gears has a bad tooth.

You have to FULLY dis-assemble the drive to get at the gear mechanism. Even then, you may not be able to repair the gear.

It's likely time for a new drive.

I had a slot drive DVD drive that had this problem - but it had been sitting unused for six months or more.

I gave it a VERY careful squirt of WD40 (penetrating oil in a pressure pack can) on the motor, and then left it spinning for 5-10 minutes. This seems to have fixed it, at least for the moment.

I would start reconciling myself to getting a new CD-R/RW drive though, 'cause it's probably the begining of the end.
'luck,

Stu
