CD-RW Drive not reading CD’s

by megasurfer . Updated 22 years, 7 months ago

I have a Windows 2000 computer with a Yamaha CR-RW drive, and a Sony DVD-RW drive, both on the secondary IDE channel. Today I put a CD in the drive to install a program, and nothing happened. I went into my computer and clicked on the drive icon and got the “Please insert a disk into drive” message. The drive will still Burn CD’s fine, recognizes a blank CD, but will not recognize a CD with data on it, burnt, or commercial. I have no idea how long this has been going on as I usually only use it to burn CD’s, not read them. I tried everything that I could think of to rectify the problem, deleted the drive and let windows set it back up, switching to PIO mode instead of DMA, even updated the firmware, and nothing works. The drive works fine in DOS so it has to be some kind of Windows or driver problem. The computer has both Easy CD Creator 5, and Nero 6 installed on it. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Baffled
