CD-RW Drive not reading CD's

By megasurfer ·
I have a Windows 2000 computer with a Yamaha CR-RW drive, and a Sony DVD-RW drive, both on the secondary IDE channel. Today I put a CD in the drive to install a program, and nothing happened. I went into my computer and clicked on the drive icon and got the "Please insert a disk into drive" message. The drive will still Burn CD's fine, recognizes a blank CD, but will not recognize a CD with data on it, burnt, or commercial. I have no idea how long this has been going on as I usually only use it to burn CD's, not read them. I tried everything that I could think of to rectify the problem, deleted the drive and let windows set it back up, switching to PIO mode instead of DMA, even updated the firmware, and nothing works. The drive works fine in DOS so it has to be some kind of Windows or driver problem. The computer has both Easy CD Creator 5, and Nero 6 installed on it. Does anybody have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Baffled

I believe that you have a software conflict.

Ahead has posted utilities to allow a PC to run either Nero or Easy CD Creator.

With both programs installed and active, there can be conflicts.

Personally, I would choose 1 of the 2 packages, and un-install the other.

Possibly, but why would it affect the CD-RW drive, and not the DVD-RW drive? I use both programs, for different purposes. Don't really want to do away with either one. Would rather live with not being able to read CD's with the CD-RW drive, or find another work around for the problem.

Hi

TheChas has it

Nero and ezcd have conflict problems

Roxio ezcd usually reads nero but not vice versa

Once in a blue moon I have had to slave a cd read only onto a sys to load a program.

Why? I have never known but such does happen

Seems to me it was only when installing a win OS

I have also had the problem described just before a cd failure.

Good luck

Nero has a boot menu utility to select which burning program to use. However, it is only for Windows 98 and Me.

You might try updating the ASPI driver and installing any Nero and Roxio updates.

Had another thought.

Can you read the CDs you burn with this drive on another PC, or with your DVD drive?

If not, the laser is so far out of alignment that it cannot properly track a recorded CD.

I can read CD's that I burn on it just fine, on the DVD drive, and other computers. I am sure you all are probably right about Nero and Easy CD Creator having conflict problems, I just cant figure why it would affect the CR-RW drive and not the DVD-RW drive?

I have Roxio Easy CD 6 and Nero 5.9.x on the same PC they worked fine as soon as I got rid of direct CD. The new version of Roxio has the DVD features. I prefer Nero but do use both in certain situations.

Uninstall and get the new version of Roxio CD creator and install that.

If you don't use them remove the direct to disk programs that come with both. They're probably running in the task tray, you can try stopping them to see what happens.
