    cd-rw/dvd-rom combo drive problems

I just got a new cd-rw/dvd-rom combo drive. I had to open it when i first got it (being Dr. FixIT) and fix one of the guide bars so it would read CD’s right. Well that worked just fine. BUT, when burning CD’s the drive starts from a random point on the CD (usually the middle of the CD). The data is usually fine up untill the point where it runs out of room on the CD. It extracts CD’s fine, but really slow for some reason (maybe 2x when windows clearly sees it can do 52x). It also plays DVDs just fine. I’v tryed oiling the guide bars for the Laser, cleaning the media, trying differend brands of CD-Rs, slow burn speeds of 1x-8x and even updated my ASPI drivers. I’ve also used several different burning programs and get the same result every time. I cant send it back to newegg where i got it from because i opened it in the first place to fix that guide rail that had poped off durring shipment, thus voiding the warranty. HELP! Iv got 19 new coasters =[

Sounds like the drive took a drop along the way.

The problem is not a sticky drive mechanism, but an out of focus laser. Or, perhaps the track is not aligned to the platter properly.

Either way, IMHO, your new combo drive is a door stop.

You might have some luck if you check the alignment of the laser track to the platter, and clean the laser lens.

Make sure that the weight that holds the disk down onto the platter is working properly.

      Hi,

I would contact the supplier, explain your situation about the rail and that you fixed it.
You never know your luck on a rainy day.
