CD-RW has disappeared

I was scanning with my HP 3200 C which had been working fine, and the document that I was scanning stopped at about 18 percent. I was not able to bring the scan program up again. I uninstalled it and now I can’t reinstall it. I found that my icon on the “my computer” screen for the CD-RW was missing. It is not listed on the Device Managers screen either. It is the Adaptec Easy CD Creator ver 4.0. Now I can’t install the CD-RW either. I did not uninstall it, and thought I’d better get some help before I dig the hole deeper.

Running Win98SE and HP 6630 computer. HELP!
