CD-RW Media Issue

By galahad04 ·
Hi, I have an external CD-RW burner that works fine with no problems 95% of the time when I burn data to CD-R/RW discs. However, after the discs are (successfully) burned, I have another non-networked computer that I typically transfer the burnedfiles to by placing the disc in my CD-ROM drive and copying the files to the computer. Mysteriously, however, whenever I try to copy non-zipped files to the 2nd computer, I get a Windows error message during the copy process that says something like "System cannot read from the specified device." The copying process then aborts abnormally. What is most interesting is that this the copy *does* sucessfully complete for zipped files. I must admit that I don't understand why the zipped files copy over but normal files cannot, especially since the computer the burner is connected to does not have any problems successfully burner to the disc media. The only difference between the two computers is that the one with the CD-burner attached is running Windows XP Pro while the 2nd computer is running Windows Me -- could there be an issue here between the two OSs?

What I suspect is either a laser alignment issue between the 2 CD drives, or a memory bug in the Me PC.

Try your disks on another PC/CD drive.
If the disks work fine on a different PC, then the problem is in the Me PC.
Download a memory optimizer from your favorite download site.
www.completelyfreesoftware.com
www.downloads.com
www.nonags.com
are 3 that I use.

This will help you check for memory leaks.

If the memory checks clean, then try a different CD drive.

In this sittuation i rather go and replace another cd-rom to the 2nd com, you might not know that you are facing unsupported cd-rom to your cd-rw.

So go and check it out 1st before jumping to the os problem. Try to use cd-r to burn cause they works well on other cd-rom, not likely the cd-rw many cd-rom does not recoqnise them.

Good Luck!!!

Update -- was able to resolve the problem on my own by doing a clean reinstall of the OS on the the Windows Me computer. But thanks to everyone for their suggestions!
