CD-RW only reads music cds

By sanderso1019 ·
I was browsing roud and thought Id ask a question for my brother. I gave him a old CD burner i had laying around because both the cd drives on his computer stopped working. Now the drive I gave him will only read music cds, no data discs. Any Idea why this might be?

However the most obvious is that if it's got a few years under it's belt the color of the Laser is not compatible with the modern blanks as instead of reflecting the light it is absorbed.

Problems like this came about when the Blank Makers moved from the Gold Dye to the more Silver Colored or Blue Dyes. The Old Kodak SCSI CD Burners where the most susceptible units that where affected by the change but many other units where also affected as time moved on and the dye types changed to what is being used now.

If the CD Burner is affected it should read any Manufactured CD including Data CD's like Windows Install Media and other program install media but it will fail to read recorded media that has the new color Dye.
