Cd will not play on XP

By archieclark45 ·
I have a cd that will not play on xp. I need this cd to play on my laptop so I can burn it. It will play in my car. It gives the message that it is not compatible with windows. Can I update my cd driver or add a codec to fix this?

What player are you attempting to use to play this CD?

What format is the CD?

Is the CD copy-protected?

it really is a cd? is it a 'burned' cd? this a music cd? with itunes or something? you might try another newer cd burner/player on your pc...
are you sure you don't mean dvd? you may need to google 'free dvd player' because windows doesn't come with the codec you need in windows media player...we love Cyberlink Power DVD but it costs about $50. others may know of free ones. you could check out what is available for your dvd player at the manufactors website such as or
others have recommended free dvd players here

There are many things that can help you decide what's the real problem behind this.

First of all can you get it to play in a different computer? If you can then you CD player could be malfuntioning. Possible.

By any chance to you know it's a MP3 that you recorded on the CD? If it is it might not necessarily play on a PC older CD-rom player.

Can you trying playing a different CD on the Laptop. If you can then the problem is with the CD or the type of Media (MP3, Wave, etc.) that might not be compatible with your Computer CD-ROM player.

These points are ment to allow you to test the CD and the player and make a decision based on the elimination process.

keep me posted.
