go to this microsoft web site:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/upgrade/compat/search/devices.asp

at 'device type' select: CD-R/RW
click 'find'

You should get a list of compatable CD-R/RW drives.

These are the CD Writers we use withsome of our Windows 2000 PC's (Dell's) at our company:
Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32A
HP CD-Writer Plus
LG CD-RW CED-8080B
Ricoh MediaMaster

Almost and cdrw with less than 12 month should work under w2k
Look at the cdrw box and see if it has a w2k compatibility logo or just search the updated HAL list at microsoft site.
