CD Writer install problem

By sgilley ·
I'm installing a plextor 12/10/32 drive in a machine running W98, AsusP5A MB,AMD KII 550.
There is an IBM 7,200 20 gig Primary master. another CD-ROM (Major Mfg) which I
moved from secondary master to primary slave. I installed the Plextor as
secondary master.
The drive is found at boot but when I get to Windows I can not find it anywhere,
Explorer or Device manager.
I've been told that updating the BIOS or reinstalling the IDE drivers is the
fix. But, if the drive is found at boot could the BIOS or IDE drivers be the
culprits?

CD Writer install problem

Hi,
This is what I had to do in order to get Windows to recognize my second CD-ROM.
If you have two IDE plugs on your Motherboard, you should have your primary hard drive(and slave hard drive if you have two hard drives)plugged into one IDE plug. Then, you would use the second IDE plug for your CD-ROMs.
Then, using the pins on your CD-ROMs, you would make one of them the primary and the other the slave.
I hope this solves the problem for you too.

I had the same problem before and I would suggest trying what the previous tech said. It worked for me! (PS...I'm currently running the Asus P5A with the AMD K6/2 550 chip at my computer at work. I love the combo!)
