Most XP compatible CD Burning Software isn't backward compatible with 98 you'll need to get your hands on some older software that was written for Win 95/8/SE that will work properly with 98.

You also may have to close the session to be able to read the written CD depending on the program used. Look at the Data Face of the CD and if there is a different color from the inside out something has been written to the CD and may be readable through the CD Burning software but not readable through just dropping the CD into the burner and attempting to read it. If you have a different color inside the CD and can not read it at all you'll have to go back to the beginning and re-burn the CD making sure that you have the correct settings enabled.

Of course knowing which brand of CD Burning software would be a great help so I could give you some more direct answers instead of just the generic ones that are above.

The brand is called "CDBurnerXP Pro 3" I have used it with success in the past on a this same machine running win98se. If you think a different one would be better, do you know of any other freeware ones?

if this program worked with win98 before then i would maybe try another burner to make sure you didn't have coincidental cd drive failure? this an internal ide burner, usb burner? this drag and drop burning or data cd burning?
i don't know if there are freeware programs. try your drive burner mfg website. if you do not have a brand, try, um, www.liteon.com
i would also look on www.tucows.com and www.downloads.com
post your cd drive burner model. maybe you could put the drive in an xp box and test burn there to rule out drive as culprit.

As I understand... XP has its burner software built in....into it..

All you have to do is drag and drop the files you want to burn on the Drive letter of your Cd writer..

... I have been using Nero for quiet sometime now..... and have found no problem using it on either Win98 or WinXp... if an any patches that are required are usually available at their web site..

www.nero.com

hope it helps
