Could be

lots of things I know I had the problem with IBM's not playing DVD's because the wrong driver installed. Can you go back to the manufacturer and get the driver?

Is it a RW drive?

by TheChas In reply to CD\DVD

First, in order to burn CDs or DVDs, the drive needs to be a "RW" drive that is capable of burning disks.

Next, while Windows XP has a basic burning capability built in, I prefer to 3rd party software such as Nero or Easy CD Creator.

As to playing DVD movies, you need either a CODEC for your media player or 3rd party software such as Power DVD or Win DVD.
