CDR Error used by "null"

By michael ·
I just started having problems with my CDRW and DVD-RW drive. Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.0 started giving me the error "No supported drives". The drives are there but the show up as being in use by "null". I have unistalled and reinstalled software;I have rolled back drive installations; I have run Norton System Works, and Virus Scan. I can't seem to get "null" to let go of the drive. Are there any suggestions?

What OS?

If Windows XP, do you have all patches from both Microsoft and Roxio installed?

Next, try removing the drives, and the IDE controller that they are connected to from device manager.
Re-boot the system, and allow Windows to re-installall devices.

If 'null' still has control of the drives, I suspect that there is a rouge left-over registry key from a software install or update.

Remember, System Works (and all registry tools) only call out missing or broken links. If the registry key points to valid objects and files, it will not be reported.

I thought I saw either a tools or an article at Roxio's site once for performing a complete un-install of Easy CD.
This goes beyond what the normal un-install program does.
Ibelieve there is also a file at nero's web site www.nero.com
to eradicate Easy CD.
(there are problems installing nero on a system that has had Roxio installed because of left-overs)

After performing the full cleanout, follow the correct re-install proceedure for your version of Windows.
