cdrom disappears

I recently tried to run the DVD-rom content from a dvd movie. Since then, I’ll get a system or explorer error every time I try to use my dvd or cdrom drive, after which they disappear. They always reappear after shutting down for a day or so, but I cannot use them. Why is this happening, and how can I fix it?
