Without more info I would
Check Device manager to see if system thinks there's a problem.
My Computer(Right Click)|Property|Device Manager Tab
If System says device running properly,
Buy CD Cleaner and apply.
Good Luck

Sounds like you you either have a funky Cdrom or some corruption in your OS. I would verify that the CDrom works in a native dos environment. Accomplish this by getting a boot disk that will load a Cdrom driver. If you don't have one then try www.bootdisk.com. Should you sucessfully boot from a disk and are able to access a CD in the drive then something is amiss in your OS. If you still can't use your Cdrom in DOS then I would say it's the drive itself and time for a replacement...

Does the tray slide out when the button is pushed? If not, there is probably a cd in the drive, but it's in crooked - huge pain, cuz now you need to open the computer, unhook the cd-rom drive, slide it out until you can get your hands around it andGENTLY press the top with both thumbs while holding it with both hands - like you are holdin a book.
Hope this helps ( I have had the same problem, only I can't blame the kids ... just me in a hurry)

Hi kevin7352,
I don't quite think you have to go to the extreme that JD did. If the tray does not slide out when you push the button(you did not give that info), look for a small hole(the size of a paperclip)on the front of the drive. Straighten a paper clip about half way and push it into that hole. When you feel tension, push hard. This will disengage the tray lock and you should be able to pull the tray open. Afterward, shutdown the system, if the power was on, or boot it up if it wasn't on. You may have to do this a couple of times for the drive to reset and operate the tray properly.
