More info is needed.
Does this happen on any certain type of disk, or is it just random.

It happens on my lexmark z700 series install disc and my comcast highspeed internet install wizard disc.

Check the bios to make sure that CDrw/dvd is being recognized,if so then problem could just be a driver that needs to be updated or reinstall the drive software

First check these disks in another Drive if you have one available. Being Pressed Cd's they may have scratches on their Data Surface and no longer be readable, or maybe only readable in a different drive with better tracking or a different color laser.

If this is the case you can make a copy of them and try again to install the printer and Internet connections.

Just as a test try recording a CD and see if you can read that one. But it sounds as if the laser intensity has dropped below a level that allows some Cd's to be read. On the up side these Combo Drives are very cheap so it shouldn't be a major issue or pain in the hip pocket to replace the drive.
