Cdr&Zip drive on 2nd ide controller gone

By pablo3b ·
installed a hard drive from my laptop with a new mobo (K7 athlon)and the old cdrom and zip have disappeared. I used to have a hdd with Win95 that worked with the drives.
Now with the new hdd they appear in BIOS as master and slave (jumpers correct) but in Win98 a little yellow exclammation point appears on the device - secondary ide controller (with a code 10 error in the details)
Both drives work with the old system. I have checked cables, jumpers. I even configured the cdrom as a slave andhooked it up on the primary controller with hdd. No cdrom drive letter in windows either, though it was there in bios. The cd has power, cds inserted spin as if being read but no action evident in windows. I looked at a registry fix which implied that the sytem was in msdos mode.(The key wasn't there to delete or change.)Help, I want my 1.1Ghz computer!

pablo,

right click on my computer
click on the device tab
then remove the devices
get out your install disc
and reinstall the cdrom first
(if you don't need one windows will give the drivers to the cdrom.)
after you reinstall the cdrom
restart the pc and put the diskette (iomega) in the floppy drive
it should be a go....
let me know if it works...it should

I would guess from what you've described that the secondary ide controller driver is not installed or not installed correctly. Verify from the motherboard mfg that you have the correct drivers for the ide controller parent device (ie Intel xxxx). This can be found in device mgr under hard drive controller. After you have the driver delete the controller from device mgr and choose refresh or shut down and restart. The OS should ask for the driver choose have disk and the location for the driver. This should correct the error.
If all goes well your cd-rom andzip should work.

make sure that your ide controller is properly installed, remove the cdrom and see if you have to install the driver thru the dos command. I run into the same problem and I got to know that in some cases it needs to be installed that way

Good luck.
