    CDs Not Dismounting/Mounting

    Locked

    by quailr ·

Problem: When one CD is replaced with another, and after the drive has apparently read the CD, explorer does not refresh with the new CD’s volume information but still reports the previous CD’s volume and directory structure. After an erratic number of eject and inserts of the new CD, it may be recognized or a reboot has been necessary. This occurs on both the DVD reader and CD burner erratically.

Environment: Windows XP Pro SP2, Dell Dimension Intel Pentium III @ 863MHz, Samsung DVD-ROM SD-612 and LG CD-RW CED-8080B

Try another CD-ROM drive. I’m guessing this could be a hardware issue.

As indicated the problem occurred on both existing drives. I suspected the DVD drive being the problem originally and removed it as master. Problem continued on CD-RW as master or slave.

Are both CD/DVD drives on the same IDE channel? Have you seen if the problem persists if you change IDE channels with one drive? Or run only one drive on the channel as master?

      It’s likely down to:
      1. Channel configuration – mix it up a bit, see what happens
      2. Main board – how’s the firmware level – up to date? If it is try everything else before looking at it as a hardware issue. What a pain to replace.
      3. Cables – not often, but sometimes it’s the bad guy.
      4. OS/drivers. Everyone hates to re-install. Maybe this is a Microsoft undocumented “feature” you’ve uncovered?

Have you Checked Dell’s Support Site? They will be able to give you any Bios or Chipset updates that are available. I would also check the drivers for the ATA controller. Make sure they are correct. Get the ones from Dell’s support site.

Also, How long has the problem occurred? What changed recently that may have lead up to the cause? Have you ever had Sony’s Rootkit installed? That will kill a CD-ROM Drive.

I would try to reset the autoplay settings for the DVD drive then restart the machine. Autoplay has been known to cause that problem, although I have to admin I have no idea why that would be.

What you need to do is update the Firmware of the Samsung DVD ROM as there is a known issue with those Drives and SP2.
