Change COM1 to COM4

By Deaq ·
I have a laptop running XP SP3 with a 9-pin RS232 port. I am running an application that reads data from a medical device into the laptop's 9-pin serial port. The application is hard coded to look for COM4 on the laptop, but when I looked in in the Device Manager of the laptop, it shows Communication port (COM1), I/O range 03F8 - 03FF, IRQ 4.

I have not been successsful in reading any data and wondered if it Is because the laptop is configures to COM1. Is it possible to reconfigure COM1 to COM4?

Your help would be much appreciated.

Right-click it.

Right-click the entry in Device Mangler and go to Properties. You should be able to change it there.

If not, you can buy a USB-to-Serial adapter for $20 or so, and tell it to be any COM port you want.

Next time, post questions in the 'Q&A' forum. The 'Discussion' forum is for matters of general discussion, not specific problems in search of a solution. The 'Water Cooler' is for non-technical discussions. You can submit a question to 'Q&A' here:;content

There are TR members who specifically seek out problems in need of a solution. Although there is some overlap between the forums, you'll find more of those members in 'Q&A' than in 'Discussions' or 'Water Cooler'.
