Change Computer Names

By don_pham ·
Hello all,
We are going to upgrade one of big application at my company that requires each computer name has be unique ID. Apparently, we have a big mess of computer name scheme here. We are looking to change it with new conventional scheme. Do you know any software or utility that allow me to do it remotely without visit every workstation or if you have any idea to do this one. I would be more than appreciate your advise.
Thank you again.

No.
You are gonna have to touch each machine. You can use remote control software if you have it, but you will still need to make the change on each machine.
A tool I like is Dameware NT Utilities. It has a remote control feature that will PUSH the client side app onto the workstations.
So, from your workstation, you connect to each user workstation, push the Dameware remote control client app on them, then your remote session starts. YOu then have remote control on the user workstation, where you can change the machinename. Then you can just disconnect from the user workstation (when it reboots from the name change), and switch to the next one.
With Dameware, you don't have to install the remote control client software first.
