JASC Software makes a product called Paint Shop Pro that will allow you to do entire batch conversions from one image type to another really quickly. For example, if you have a directory of jpegs and you want them to be gifs, then it will do this for you saving a lot of time. You can even opt to keep both formats if you want.
I use it a lot for this. It also has a cool feature that lets you view as thumbnails the entire contents of a directory of images and just double-click on the one that you want to enlarge.
Your question is the very reason why I have invested the small funds to purchase and keep upgrading this very powerful and versatile program called Paint Shop Pro. I was quite tired of trying to figure out how to take one type of image and convert to another for different effects. Now I find I have little problems in this area. Image conversion is not the ONLY advantage to Paint Shop Pro, but it's the main reason I bought it.
Get Visua95 (you might find it at nonags.com) it is freeware and will convert many image types, the nice thing is that you can select as many files as you want and it will convert them all.
