Changing administrator pwd in NT 4.5

By rhiegen ·
Hi People,
I have a PDC with Windows NT 4.5 and a BDC with the same system. The PDC works as file, web, authentication and proxy server. The BDC as Exchange server too. Every time I change Administrator's password I need to go to every service and retype administrator's password, including in IIS, Exchange services, etc. What?s the way out to make this change once, without having to retype this password in all those services?

Changing administrator pwd in NT 4.5

You need a third party tool to do this (short of scripting a solution). One of them is called, fittingly enough, NT Service account manager:

If you crack open a copy of Microsoft Certified Professional Magazine, you'll also come across a couple of ads for products that do this.

An even better solution is to give services their own account, protect it with complex 14-character password. That way changing the admin password will not entail changing the password in 3 or 4 places in Exchange. Services should get their own service account. Just ensure that that Exchange Service Account gets the correct rights associated with it. A domain admin account without the additional rights will not function properly.
