On desktop (as an administrator), right-click on the "My Computer" icon. Select "Properties." Select the "Network Identification" tab. Press the "Properties" button. Enter the name you want in the field listed, then hit OK.

Poster rated this answer. I know how to change the name, but I need to change the Description. I am able to do it in 98 and XP, but can't find it in 2000. Thanks.

Sorry about that. Perhaps you mean the information that is stored in the Registry at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\CentralProcessor\0

That's where the identification string is stored that appears when you ricght-click on My Computer and select Properties.

If that's not what you want, then try this: on the computer you want run from a command prompt NET CONFIG SERVER /SRVCOMMENT:"XXXX" (replace the XXXX with the description you want.

Poster rated this answer. It helped, but was not totally on the money. It did point me to looking directly at the registry (I had hoped there would be an easier way). The actual location is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\lanmanserver\parameters, I had to add a new string value of srvcomment with the data being the desired description. I would think there should be an easier way.
