Changing Computer Name in WinNT

By patrick.branan ·
I am having trouble changing the names of my workstations in Windows NT. When I change the name, the computer is no longer reconized by the PDC and is not allowed to log onto the network. I know I am missing a step somewhere, I just don't know what. I have enabled DHCP, DNS and WINS Addressing. I need to change my computer naming convention and still have my users login the next morining. HELP

Changing Computer Name in WinNT

When changing the computer name you need to:

1. Change the computer name then take the computer out of the domain (into a temp workgroup) then add the computer (with new name) to the domain and have it create a computer account. or
2. Change thecomputer name then open Server Manager on the PDC then add the computer name to the domain then synchronize the domain (if you have more than one domain controller).

Hope this helps you out.

PS: After either one you must reboot the Workstation for the changes to be completed.
