changing from wired to wireless router

By ced6582 ·
I purchased a SMC 7004ABR (wired) router and 100 ft of cat5e cable. Now I'm thinking I would like to go wireless. Is there any kind of conversion kit that I don't know about or do I need to buy a new wireless router and access point?

There are kits of wireless products... but no way to "convert" a wired LAN to wireless.

You will need wireless network adapters for each computer you want to attach to the wireless LAN. You may or may not need an access point (it's made to extend network distances between all the computers on the LAN). You may not need a wireless router either -- it depends on what your distances are between devices and what you hope to do. How many computers do you have?

You could have a regular wired router connected to your demark point (cable/DSL or WAN connection) and then an access point connected to it (if your demark is centrally located).

You'd need to provide more details for us to get at what may be best for you.

Instead of replacing your current router.

Just buy a wireless access point and connect that to one of the switch ports on the router.

Wireless Access Points are their own without a router are relatively cheap.

I just want to add that this is going to be a very simple setup (for the home). I'm just trying to connect 2 computers, probably 50 ft away from each other and a printer.
