Changing IP address of PDC

By Numbies ·
I need to change the IP address of our PDC as we have got an official Internet IP Scope. When I change the IP address and reboot the PDc, I get a message saying no Primary DC could be found for this domain? I know there is probably a simple explanaition, but I can't find the answer!

Any help would be appreciated.

Make sure you have the IP and Subnet mask right. Also, make sure that you delete any entries from WINS and DNS that points to your server.

Yeah, subnet mask is the obvious one. Are you using lmhosts? That will need changing if you are, otherwise check your WINS and DNS entries...

If you have a local BDC change the IP on it (if required), give it all of the responsibilities (WINS, DHCP, etc.) that the PDC currently has, then promote it to PDC. This will demote the true PDC to a BDC. Change it's IP address, transfer the responsibilities back to it from the current PDC then promote it back to PDC.

If this doesn't solve the problem itself it will at least help you obtain more information about what might be causing it. If you don't have a BDC you might consider building one from an extra computer temporarily.

I suspect you have manual entries on your WINS server pointing to the old IP address for the PDC. It checks with the WINS server and, since there is no computer with the old IP address, it can't find itself.

Hope this helps.

Check your WINS, you may have picked up the PDC and changed that, but what about the entry for the Domain ?

I'm assuming your getting this message on the client machines. If so, try and ping the PDC from a client. If you cant ping the PDC then you may need to change the IPs on the clients so they can communicate with the PDC. Then all problems will be solved
