Changing IP addresses

by greg leversha . Updated 25 years, 6 months ago

At a section of our 26? acre complex, we have a shed that has a HP NetServer E60 (NT4.0 SP6a) running as a PDC. This is also the only PC in the domain. It is running an IP address of 192.168.5.1 This used to connect to the outside world via an ISDNlink to the main office, thence out to the rest of the world via the proxy server.

This shed has recently been connected via 400yards of fibre optic cable to the main office.

The PCs in the main office have 203.41.XXX.XXX public IP addresses. I’ve tried to change the IP address on the shed server to the same group as that of the main office, but when the server restarts it the workstation service & the browser service won?t start. The workstation service can be started manually, but will not start automatically.

The login box only shows domains, the name of the local PC isn?t visible. Once logged in the other domains can be browsed, but not the local one. This shows the fibre optic link is working.

Login and change the IP address back to what it was and everything works as it did before. The only problem is now that there isn?t a router to the main office there isn?t a connection to the rest of the world.

Why does changing the IP address cause this problem? Does anyonehave any ideas?
