Changing replica types

By chris.riley ·
I have 5 NetWare 4.11 servers in a WAN (3 sites). As we are going to go to NetWare 5.1 I moved the master replica of from one server to another (at seperate sites) on Friday as this is the first server to go to 5.1.

Monday morning and the network at the site where I moved the master replica to is very slow. Obviously there is now more network traffic but I didn't expect it to be this bad. Is it because NDS is still doing more stuff in the replica move? How long should it take (5 servers, 500 users roughly)?

Changing replica types

Chris,
Is your Timesync OK now? You haven't done anything to that question yet... First of all make sure timesync is OK.

Second, is it a real move or did you just change the type? Changing a replica type from r/w to master takes, on a lan, just a few minutes. Never more than half an hour on a wan, since it doesn't change anything to the replica itself, it just changes a flag, and makes sure everyone is aware of that.
Check in NDSMGR32, right-click your partition, and select "Partition Continuity". This shows a grid, that you should read as "server x thinks of server y that..." his partition is OK, the last sync was at 15:32, and he's a master. For example.
If all servers agree on all partitions, everything is fine, and the problem is elsewhere. The only difference you should see is a few minutes on the last synchronisation. If they do not all agree, you can easily pick out the troubled guys. They should give a clear error (-6xx). If not, let us know, we can troubleshoot further.

One more thing: NDS traffic is low priority, so it will as good as never bother data traffic.

Jim,

Thanks for your advice. I've gone back to how it was in the first place which has resolved the problem. This just means that I'll have to upgrade this server to NW5.1 first (tonight!).

Still haven't resolved the timesync problem but I have gone through all the NDS health check that is recommended pre NW5.1 upgrade and everything seems ok.
