Has anyone ever heard of the default TCP/IP settings in XP changing from ?auto? to subnet no gateway no dns like you would use with a crossover cable for two computers?

Not a 192 address

When DHCP goes down Microsoft usually goes to a 169.x.x.x address.

I would lok at the alternate address setting on the NIC. This WOULD replace the 169 addres if it were manaully added as teh alternate.
