changing text extension

By burgerbaron ·
When i try to rename files with a different extension i cannot get rid of the text extension in notepad. for example i name a file
WXP-IPConfig.hta after editing it and i get
WXP-IPConfig.hta.txt. I try to both save as and rename with no luck changing the extension.

Have you tried:
Windows explorer
--folder options
---view tab
remove "Hide file extensions for known file types" checkmark

Do this

Use quotes, "WXP-IPConfig.hta", or use Save As and change the Save As Type to All Files.

why change

by shyantan In reply to Do this

why do you want to change such type of extention. is there a need of privacy,(if yes)use any software for crypting.
and if still you want to change only the extention better do it in dos prompt by
c>ren [path_filename.txt] [path_filename.hta]

with regards

You miss the point

Many of us use Notepad to edit all manner of text based files, which do NOT use the .txt extension. ASP web pages, HTML web pages, scripts and INI files are al examples of files which are 'text based' but use different extensions. If you need to edit some HTML by hand, NotePad is often quicker and easier than any dedicated HTML editor. By default, Notepad wants to save all files as .txt, but by changing the Save As Files Of Type box from 'Text' to 'All Files', any extension of choice may be appended to a file name. If you leave the default setting (save as Text), even if you add an extension of your own (e.g. .asp or .htm), Notepad will append an additional .txt (a double extension) on the end of the file name, which we don't want!
