Changing the home drive

By dryflies ·
OK,
I added a hard drive and upgraded to XP about two years ago. When I installed XP on the new HD it made f: the system drive.
A. How do I change it back to be c
B. How do I set all of my apps to look at c
C. how do I change programs to believe they are on c: instead of F

I just want the system to be like any other normal system with C: as its main drive.

I believe you can do this through computer mgmt in administrative tools.
*But, to make your apps look in the right place, I think you need to use something like Norton Partition Magic, that has drive mapper. Otherwise, you would have to go through the registry and change every reference from F: to C:

Is there a particular reason you are not happy with the letter f: compared to the letter c:??

Is c: already used on your system ie another hard drive or partition?

Do you have 2 hard drives on your system or one?

If it were me I would reload XP and the Applications on the primary new hard drive and keep the older ( maybe c: drive as a slave ) as it's best to boot up on the fastest.

Otherwise to change all your apps over you would be best to un-install and re-install choosing the new C: instead of f:

The old HD crashed eventually. Many applications assume C: as the primary and do not work correctly with the primary as f: short sited of them not to use the environment to set drive letters but thats how it goes.

Hello...

A. How do I change it back to be c

Answer: You can follow the procedure defined in answer #1 for this. But...

B. How do I set all of my apps to look at c
C. how do I change programs to believe they are on c: instead of F

Answer: Applications that were installed when the drive was labelled F: must be reinstalled to work on C:. Applications store drive letters and paths in their own ways. There is no simple method to change all of these paths except reinstallation.
