Changing the NetBIOS name of a PDC

By joemoran ·
Anybody know whether this can be done safely?

I don't need to make any other changes, and no one is mapping to this server or anything like that; all I want to do is rename it.

Do I need to first create a new computer account, or should I demote the PDC, rename it, and then promote it?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Joe

Right click on Network Neighborhood, on the first tab (identity), click on the change button. There you can change the NetBIOS name of the computer. You will have to reboot for it to take effect. Anyone with mapped drives to the old name will have to remap to the new share.

U can change the name safely but userss will have to map to the new PDC name. Go to Network Neighborhood - Right Click on it and go to Properties. On the Identification tab change the name as desired. Reboot the PC and the new name takes effect.
Hope it helps.

There's a little more to it than that, when you are renaming a domain controller. Here's a step-by-step that works:
1. From the console of the PDC, go to Control Panel Network \ Identification tab.
2. Click the change button next to the computer name. Enter the new name and click OK.
3. Restart the PDC for the name change to take effect.
4. After reboot, open Server Manager, if the old name still appears as a Backup, or if there is no entry for the new name, do the following:
5. Create anentry for the new name. Select Add to Domain in the Computer menu of Server Manager. Add the new computer account as a "Windows NT Backup Domain Controller" (it will be added and displayed as a Primary).
6. Remove the old name by selecting the entry, then select Remove from Domain on the Computer menu.

Good luck,

Ian
