    Changing the Print Server

    Locked

    by ayuen888 ·

I’m planning to change the name of my windows based print server and was wondering what’s the best way to redirect all my client computers to the new server. Anybody have any ideas on the easiest way to do it?

      Windows 2003 R2

If you have Windows 2003 R2, you can deploy printers via a GPO.

If not, you could create a VBS that checks to see if a printer is mapped and if it is to diconnect it and remap it to another name.

Another option is to make static DNS and WINS entries to fool the clients into thinking they are still connected to the old server when really it is the new server IP address and name.

Microsoft has developed a very cool tool which now helps us be able to migrate Print queues from one server to another. I believe the tool is called “PrintMig”.
