Checkdisk On Every Boot

A friend is running XP Pro on a Dell laptop. Every time he starts or re-boots the machine it makes it to the black XP screen then starts checkdisk. Whether or not he lets the operation complete, or cancels it, the machine runs fine. It’s very annoying. Any suggestions as to possible causes?
