Chinese windows

By computab ·
I have a PC with Windows in Chinese, and I need to install Windows in English. There are no manufacturer details & no drivers available, & I cant read Chinese. If I copy the System and inf folders, will I be able to reinstall the modem, sound and display drivers?

No, unfortunately not. The registry and other components will not be cleared of all the International settings (I've seen this with Japanese Win98 as well) and Windows will not be stable.

The best option is to use a English boot disk, boot viait, and fdisk and format the hdd. Start over. The video, you can always use the standard drivers. You may also be able to use generic drivers for the modem (probably hayes compatible) and sound card.

Depending on the version of OS that you intend to use with this computer, the drivers may automatically be recognized and install without problem. Especially if this is a newer machine, and you intend to use Win2000 or WinXP.

I re-read your question. The system and inf folders only contain the system and inf files for these devices.... there are also .vxd files and .dll files and probably a whole directory for the modem software. But since everything is in Chinese, I'd still recommend totally starting over and using standard drivers, or using one of the advisor software that will give you specifics on hardware and software ( http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html ).

I did format the HD, but will probably have to install a PCMCIA modem.
