As far as I know, explicitly defining the serial version UID in a java class is discouraged by SUN, for recent java releases. In earlier releases, explicitly defining the UID could sometimes help improve the performance of the serialization process -- which was the main purpose for using it. However, with later java releases, there is no performance gain when using an explicitly defined UID, so it's not a good idea to use it nowadays.
