What could be the cause of the problem?

Network Dropout

by gechurch In reply to Cisco ASA 5505 VPN

Clearly the network is dropping out and killing the VPN connection. I assume you have Internet access at each end, and the VPN is connected over this? If so you should first check to see if the Internet is dropping out or just the VPN. There are various ways to do this, but one of the simplest is to open a command prompt at each end and type:
ping -t

That will continually ping Wait for the VPN connection to drop, and see if that corresponds with dropped packets from the ping of Google. If it does you've found your problem (and the next steps are to replace your modem and/or contact your ISP to make sure your phone cable is ok).

If Internet dropouts aren't happening then it could be something like a router bug, something funky in the config, hardware fault, bad network cable etc. Start by swapping simple things like network cables. If you can, backup the config and start with a new, very basic config. If that's doesn't help try swapping out the Cisco's with a spare.
