If you want to recover the password then check out:
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/474/
But this only works when directly connected to the router with a console cable, for security reasons it won't work via telnet.

To add to the other advice. You do have to connect to the router using terminal at the console port using a rolled RJ45 cable.

Here is a wiring and connection link

Here is the site for resetting password for 2600 and related routers.

Set up hyperterminal (9600 baud rate,no parity 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, No flow control) then connect your workstation to the console port of the 2600 and restart the router. When it begins the start up process (within 60 seconds), hit <BREAK> to stop the boot sequence. You should then come to a prompt of rommon>. type:

confreg 0x2142

reset

This will restart the router to your normal user prompt (bypassing the configuration). Type "enable" to log into privileged exec mode.

Then type"copy start run" to load the saved configuration. Then change your password (config t then enable secret <password> - where <password> is the new password you want). You can do this because you are already in exec mode. :)

After you reset your password, reset your configuration register to the standard (at the config t prompt, type config-register 0x2102 ).

This should take care of it.

If you run into any snags, let me know, I'll be glad to help further.

Good luck!
