Cisco Switch Setup HELP!!

By cannond5 ·
I just purchase a Cisco 2924 Switch. I have plugged it in, and connected it to my laptop thru com3. I can't figure out how to set it up...IP address, etc. Can anyone please give me some help? I've been all over the CDs that came with the switch, and I've been all over Cisco's website, and I'm not finding the answers I need. Thanks!

Use the following setting to connect to the Cisco switch through the console port.

Hyperterm Direct connection
Com 3
9600
8
N
1

If you get connected and it is a new switch it will walk you through setting the IP address. If its already been configured.

To change IP address:
1. En
2. Config t
3. Int vlan 1
4. Ip address ip_address subnet_mast
5. IP default-gateway ip_address
7. exit
8. Show running-config
9. Write

I did this, but still got only a blank screen. It says connected, but won't respond to any commands. This is a new switch.

You said this was a new switch. Are you using the console cable they sent with it? From what you described earlier, hyperterminal is connects, but you get no response. It's been my experience that Cisco uses two types of cables for console connections. One is their flat, 8-wire, RJ-45 cable which is "rolled"...i.e. 1 goes to 8, 2 goes to 7, etc... Or they use a straight through ethernet cable. If you're not having success with one type of cable, try the other. Make sure you are using their DB-9 to RJ-45 adapter as well. Once you get your connection established, the advice the other responder gave you will be valid. Best wishes,

Hi there,

May I ask you what do you intend to do with the switch and what do you have in mind because we are using Cisco 2924 in our network. Maybe I can be of some help.

Dear cannon5,

You dont have to set anything or configure anything to the Cisco 2924 if youjust want to add another switch to your network. If you are doing a bandwidth monitoring or management then you need to configure the 2924. You will have toconfigure it per port.

Hope this help.
