Clash or Trash?

By wsroadrunner ·
Presentlty we have a Compaq Presario 5220 with an AMD K6-2 500 processor & 128 MB RAM on the bench. This unit has an Imation LS-120 (stock), a Philips CDRW, and a Maxtor 30.7 GB HD. Problem is, evertime it is loaded with software it freezes and will only run in safe mode. This happens even without the 120 or the CDRW and has 3 of us ready to trash it out. Maxtor and Philips are playing the blame game... blaming the other components, but I think there's more to it. The unit is running Win 98 and has been updated, it just doesn't seem to want to run in this machine. I'm dying to know what I'm missing here, because the problem started after the Maxtor was installed... It's been replaced and made no difference. The only thing that seems to work is to go back to the original Quantum Bigfoot drive. Any ideas before I pull out my remaining hair?

Any number of things could be causing the problem
1)check the memory,to insure that it is not bad.
2)uninstall all cards, except video and try setup, then load cards back.
3)There is a problem noted by AMD with loading windows operating system on processors over 300mhz,you can try under clocking to load OS,disable the L1 and L2 cache, which will take longer to load OS.
Go to the AMD web site to download the fix to see if this solves problem.

If it runs in safe mode, I don't know that the HD is the issue. Are you using the compaq restore CD? there must be a driver on the quantum that is not getting to the new drive. I would give Compaq a call and let them know whats up. I have an HP and after I changed the CDR the restore disks would not work. HP told me the restore program looks for specific items but they were kind enough to tell me how to change that and get my system running.
