A clean install is considereddone when everything is wiped from the drive you re-partition and format the drive
Installing over a previous version of the OS is not considered a clean install, yet it reloads the operating system and then you may haveto reload some of the applications and programs that is installed on your system,it does wipe out all updates that are currently installed,so this may be what you are considring doing without a refomat of C:drive

This works easier if you have another computer that you can install the drive in as a slave.

Alternately, brush up on your DOS file commnands, or download a DOS file manager.

1. If you don't already have one, create a W98 boot disk.
Also, make sure you have up to date drivers on hand for all of the hardware in the system.
2. Delete all files in the root folder (C: )
3. Delete most of the files in the Windows and Windows\System folder.
You can keep files for programs, cursors and screen savers that you want to have when you re-install Windows.
4. Delete the files in the System32 folder and it's sub-folders.
5. The only other folder that you need to consider deleating is the fonts folder. The remaining sub folders in the Windows folder have little effect on installing the OS.
6. If you did this with the drive on another machine, empty the recycle bin.

Now, boot from a floppy, and begin installing Windows.

When you get to the point of driver installation, install the chipset (mother-board) drivers before installing any other device drivers. Exit the Windows driver wizard as needed.
Your video card driver may require that DirectX be installed before the driver is installed.
Your modem may require that thedriver be installed before the card is installed in the slot.

Windows 98 will set you up with IE version 4, so you will need to re-install the newer version of IE, Windows updates, and your applications.
Even though you left the files on the drive, Windows won't know that the programs are there, or how to use them. Also, many place DLL files in the Windows folder.

It depends on what you mean by clean install. A clean install will wipe all traces of the old Win OS. The easiest way is to use the deltree command.

Boot the system into DOS. Change into the windows directory (c:\windows\) and type "Deltree /Y*.*". This will obliterate the directory.
